Persona dell'anno 2018 Time: i giornalisti Guardiani della verità

Il 2 ottobre 2018 il giornalista Jamal Khashoggi varcava la soglia del consolato saudita a Istanbul e spariva per sempre. L'omicidio efferato dell'uomo che ha osato dire al popolo saudita di pensare con la propria testa, dice tanto del modo con cui il principe Mohammed bin Salman punisce chi osa criticare il suo operato. La morte di Khashoggi ha squarciato un velo sul sovrano sorridente e sulla patina di innovazione e apertura alla modernità dell'Arabia Saudita.

Solo che Khashoggi non è stato l'unico giornalista a perdere la vita o la propria libertà per difendere la verità. Ci sono i giornalisti di Capital Gazette, di cui cinque membri sono stati uccisi in un assalto terroristico alla redazione. Ci sono Wa Lone e Kyaw Soe Oo, i due giornalisti della Reuters arrestati e condannati attraverso un processo farsa in Myanmar. Infine c'è la direttrice del sito di filippino Rappler, Maria Ressa, sottoposta a censure e minacce da parte del regime di Duterte.

Tutti loro sono i Guardiani, e Time li ha scelti come Persona dell'anno 2018.

"Studiando le scelte per il 2018 ci è apparso chiaramente che la manipolazione e l’abuso della verità sono stati il comune denominatore di tante delle più grandi storie dell’anno", ha detto il direttore della rivista Edward Felsenthal.

La copertina dedicata a Jamal Khashoggi segna un nuovo primato: è la prima volta che Time sceglie una persona morta per una cover dedicata alla persona dell'anno. "Ma è anche la prima volta che l'influenza di una persona cresce in modo così considerevole dopo la sua morte", fanno sapere dal magazine.

Maria Ressa, 55 anni, dirige Rappler, sito di informazione di cui è anche fondatrice. Nonostante le violente critiche sui social e l'ostracismo governativo, Rappler ha documentato la violenta guerra della droga che ha dilaniato il Paese e le esecuzioni sommarie del presidente Rodrigo Duterte, che sono costate la vita a 12.000 persone. Rappler has chronicled the violent drug war and extrajudicial killings of President Rodrigo #Duterte that have left some 12,000 people dead, according to a January estimate from @humanrightswatch. Duterte has called Rappler “fake news” and banned its reporters from presidential events. The government recently charged Ressa with tax fraud—a move widely viewed as an attempted crackdown on Rappler's reporting. She faces a possible 10-year sentence. Ad Annapolis, nel Maryland, c'è un quotidiano - la Capital Gazette - che snoda la sua storia attraverso gli eventi del Paese prima della Rivoluzione Americana. Il 28 giugno la sua redazione ha perso cinque colleghi, uccisi in un attentato terroristico. Da quel momento i legami tra il giornale e la comunità si sono rafforzati, scacciando anche il fantasma del discredito sulle notizie nazionali, fortemente minacciato dal clima di scetticismo e dal fantasma delle fake news, sventolato dallo stesso Trump a ogni piè sospinto.

Per la copertina dedicata a Kyaw Soe Oo e Wa Lone, Time ha scelto di ritrarre le loro mogli, Pan Ei Mon e Chit Su Win, con in mano le foto dei mariti. I due giornalisti sono finiti in carcere in Myanmar a causa del loro lavoro, che ha portato alla luce le atrocità di regime sulla minoranza dei Rohingya. "Era così appassionato del suo lavoro che non ho potuto chiedergli di smettere", ha dichiarato Chit Su Win. I due giornalisti ora stanno scontando una pena di sette anni. I "Guardiani" hanno battuto Donald Trump, candidato per la seconda volta dopo il 2016, e giunto secondo. Al terzo posto si piazza il procuratore speciale Robert Mueller: a giudizio del direttore Felsenthal "quest'anno era troppo presto, ma per come stanno andando le cose potrebbe toccare a Mueller la copertina della Persona dell'Anno 2019".
